The heart of man. The very center of his soul. A very interesting and deceptive organ planted within every person. But we are not going to be speaking about the literal organ, but about the spiritual part of the heart. Where the LORD tells us to worship Him with all of our mind, heart and soul. So we are going to be focused on the heart.

We are going to start by defining some differences between the mind, the heart and the soul. The mind is the central processing center in which most of our thought processes seem to occur. Whenever a thought comes to mind we either, entertain it, rebuke it, or store it. This is where we can now see where the heart comes into play. If we store this information, it has now been moved from our mind into our heart. Now the soul, is who we are as a person. We have a mind, a heart and a soul. But our soul is really who we are. Our soul is comprised of what we store in our heart, so if we store evil in our heart, then we as a person will probably be evil and everybody will know us as an evil person. But if we store good things in our hearts and we do good things for ourselves and others, then we will probably be known as a good person in general to others.

Now let’s start looking at what the Word of God says about the heart. The first thing that I want to point out is what it says in (Jeremiah 17:9) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (KJV). The reason I chose this particular verse, is because so many people preach “to follow your heart”. This is obviously a bad idea!!! Because our hearts are deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. And where it says “and who can know it?” Well we know that only God can truly know our hearts. As a matter of fact it says that He knows them better than we do, that is probably because throughout this study, you will see that God is very involved in the matters of the hearts. He is close to the broken hearted, He gives people new hearts, He changes the conditions in the hearts, He hardens hearts, He softens hearts, He touches hearts, He puts wisdom in the hearts, He tests the hearts, He gives understanding to the heart, He gives specific skills to the heart, He cleans the heart, He purifies the heart, and a whole lot more, as you will see as you go through the study.

Since we know that the heart is deceitful above all things, then we can conclude that we should probably be very careful in how we listen to it. As you will see below, there are a few different words in Scripture that are used for the word “heart”. And like the very first word used in Scripture “leb” (Hebrew), this word describes a lot of different attributes of the heart. It is used to describe feelings, the will, the intellect, the center of something, courage, understanding, wisdom, etc. So we see that when they translate these words, they try to interpret them into the most logical form for the sentence structure, to fit what is being said. There are only a few different words that are used for the word heart in Scripture, three in Hebrew (leb, lebab, and sekviy), each word is a little different in meaning and each one is used properly for the sentence structure. In the Greek there are only two different ones (kardia, sklerokardia), which both have different meanings. The one is speaking about having a heart and the other about being hard hearted, like almost destitute of having one.

In the Jewish culture, the Jews believed that the emotions were kept in the inward parts, some scholars suggest that they were actually kept in the belly. And there are some other words used in the Hebrew that suggest this. I kept running across these words during this study, but chose not to include them, for I was just trying to keep to the topic. But if you are really interested I would suggest to do a word study on either (Inward parts, belly, or stomach). Now I do not know, if you know anybody that says that they get butterflies in their stomachs, or you get an upset stomach watching something, but I can say that I know people who say these things, and I can testify of having my heart broke, where it felt like my heart was jerked and my stomach was upset. So I think that the Jews might have some validity in this area.

I want to cover some of the different attributes of the heart. When we look at the list below we can see that there are a lot of different things that are stored in our hearts. First we will look at the good things, like integrity, wisdom, understanding, our imagination, discernment, our intentions, our motives, our desires, our reason, our trust, our loyalty, our hope, our humility. Now let’s look at some of the other things that dwell within our hearts; murder, envy, hatred, adultery, fornication, bitterness, secrets, deceit, wickedness, iniquity, foolishness, perversity, pride, abominations, defiance, rebellion, self-seeking.

We can now see that the heart is deceitful above all things. There is a lot more going on inside than we can actually see. People in general can be read like books, you will in general know what kind of a person they are by what comes out of their mouths. But some people are really good at hiding who they really are. They put up a facade that you cannot tell what is going on until it is too late. They are the Judas Iscariots of the Bible.

Now according to Scripture we do not have a clean heart until we are born again, when we are born again it tells us that God gives us a new heart, that is clean, and we are a new creation in Christ, but we do not always act like it. That is because we still have a fallen nature that is always trying to pull us back into our fleshly desires. Things that are contrary to God’s best for us. Let’s take sex for an example, sex was created by God for intimacy in a marriage relationship, but the enemy of our souls, wants us to have it with anybody we desire. The problem with that is that there are consequences for doing that. If you are married and you do that, then you have committed adultery and you might end up going thru a divorce. If you are not married and you are having sex, then you are fornicating and you might have unwanted children outside of wedlock and or a sexually transmitted disease.

When we are told to worship the LORD with all of our mind, our heart, and our soul, we are told to do something that can be done! In this study you will see a section that tells us what we should be doing to be right with God. He has a part and we have a part. Our part is to bring our hearts to him, ask him to clean us up when we backslide (Also known as repentance), we need to believe God and hide His words in our hearts. We need to purify our hearts by faith, and we do this by applying the Word of God into our lives. We are told many times and in different ways that it is our responsibility to get God’s word into our hearts. This is our part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we do this, a great change starts happening in your life. You have power over the enemy of your soul and now you know what the LORD requires of you and you quit living your lives by your feelings. Now God gave us feelings and they are not a bad thing, but they can be bad, if they get out of balance. In this study you will also see a section on different emotions that are in our hearts also.
