Martin Luther (Convicted)

Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason-I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other-my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.

Martin Luther (Priest, 1483 – 1546)

Martin Luther (Reformation)

From the beginning of my Reformation I have asked God to send me neither dreams, nor visions, nor angels, but to give me the right understanding of His Word, the Holy Scriptures; for as long as I have God’s Word, I know that I am walking in His way and that I shall not fall into any error or delusion.

Martin Luther (Priest, 1483-1546)

The “Mind”

(Matthew 22:37)

Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  (NKJV). As we see, clearly in Scripture that the Lord wanted us to know that there are clear differences between our heart, our soul, and our mind. As it is said “You think about it (The mind), you decide to do it (The heart), and then act on the thought (Your soul). This is where people come to their conclusions of who you are. Or as the world likes to say “don’t judge me”. In our human nature we make judgments continuously all day long, when to get up, what to eat, how we are going to spend our day, and as a society, we determine principles to live by and pass laws in order to judge each other’s actions.

But the whole process of how we think is determined in our mind first, before it enters into our hearts. And once it enters into our hearts, it determines who we become. According to Scripture when we are born again, we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. This tells us that the LORD Himself starts a new regeneration process that corrects our way of thinking. For when we are born again (Spiritually), we are now a new creation. So God starts cleaning up our lives. Once we accept Him as Lord and Savior, the process begins. He removes the guilt and shame, He gives us a heart of flesh (A clean heart/ Undefiled). Removes our sins as far as the East is from the West. He then starts a process in which He starts removing the virus’ that have our hard drive corrupted and puts in anti-virus protection. This begins by having us read His Word (The Holy Bible). We start to learn who God is, how He thinks, about His character, what He has done for us (Sent His son to die on the cross, for our sins). How our faith in God is a gift, we cannot earn it or buy it. How there is a real spiritual battle that is waging war against us as a human race, regardless of race, religion, gender, etc. That Satan is here to kill, steal, and destroy and his ultimate goal is to keep you from spending eternity with God in heaven.

This is where the battle begins, in the mind. Not every one of your thoughts are necessarily generated by you, for example. Sometimes you might have a perverted thought, that you know is not of who you are. Well, we can conclude that this was not of you and we definitely know that this thought did not originate from God, so we can conclude that this would have been produced by the one “Satan”, who wants to do anything that he can to ensnare you into any kind of way contrary to what the LORD has in store for your life. We know when we study Scripture that the LORD wants you to live a life of purity, so we know that He would not tempt you with such a thought. Have you ever had such a brilliant thought that you were like “Wow, I am smart!” That thought might not have originated from you either, that thought could have been given to you for a purpose, a solution to a problem, a vision for the future, a way to provide for yourself, etc. This could have came from God, if it does not include any kind of evil attachment.

Now that we have established that the mind is where the initial thought processes begin, this is also where we have decisions to be made. To entertain a thought or possibly abort it. According to Jesus, if a man looks at a woman in lust, he has committed adultery. What does this tell us about how God looks at our thinking process. According to (Hebrews 4:12) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  (NKJV). This tells us that God knows our thoughts and the intents of our hearts, other places in Scripture it tells us that God also knows what we are going to say, before we say it, what a thought! Now that we know that the LORD knows everything about us and we cannot hide any of it from Him, we should have a different perspective of who He is. Remember He still loves you, even with knowing everything about you. What a thought!!!

When a thought comes to mind, we either can entertain these thoughts or we can abort them. Now as I was saying earlier, we have an adversary (The Devil), who wants to keep us separated from God for all of eternity and he does not care how he does it, as long as it produces the long term goal “Separation”. Now many people think, I am not that bad and in general I do the right thing. I have never killed anybody, I go to church, I don’t steal, I have a job, I provide for myself, etc. And all of these things are good, but we have all fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), which means, none of us are perfect. And in order to be right with God, we have to live up to His perfect law (The Ten Commandments). And none of us do!!! That is why His son had to die on the cross, to get us right again with God the Father.

Now, we think that if we are a good person in general and do the right thing, we should make it to heaven under these conditions, but according to Scripture this is not true. God judges us differently then we judge each other. His judgment is perfect and He judges perfectly. He has put into effect a whole bunch of different processes throughout the universe that we are still trying to understand, through what we call science. Since we see through Scripture that God sees our thoughts and our intentions, we can conclude that He knows us better than we know ourselves. Well, there is someone else that knows us pretty well also, his name, (Satan). He is a fallen angel who roams about this earth like a roaring lion, looking at whom he may devour. He has a third of the angels from heaven also that are under his control, causing havoc throughout the earth. I am pretty sure that they report to him, for when you study Scripture you will see that “Satan” has a well established army of fallen angels who have studied you your entire life and have spent a lot of time doing everything possible to keep you from knowing God and spending eternity with him. They know all of your temptations, whatever they are (Sex, work, food, fishing, partying, drugs, alcohol, etc.) Some of you are asking “work”, what kind of temptation is that? Satan doesn’t care what you do, as long as you do not spend your time with God or getting to know Him. Work all you want, spend all of your time chasing worldly pursuits (Success, money, power, etc.) watch as much TV as you like, facebook all you want, play all the video games that you like, have as much sex as you like with whoever you like to, he does not care what you do, as long as it keeps you separated from God!!! In Matthew chapter 4, Satan even tempted Jesus Himself with all of these worldly pleasures, as long as Jesus did not pursue the Father’s will for His life. But Jesus let Satan know, that he was nothing but a tool being used by God, to fulfill His purpose. Jesus told Satan “you shall worship your God, and serve Him only.” In this statement you see that Jesus was letting Satan know, that he has no power over Him. Did it send Satan packing, yes, but just for a moment, for he continued to pursue Jesus his entire existence here on earth. Just as he does us. Satan will either attack us in one of two ways, either blatantly or subtlety. Most of the time subtlety until we know that he is there, then the blatant attacks come. But he is good at the subtlety. Well, he does this when influencing our thought processes too. If he can get us doing things that keep us from fulfilling what God has planned for our lives, then he is right on target.

We are going to address what Scripture teaches us about the mind. There are 7 different words in Scripture that are used for the word “mind”, and a whole lot of other words to describe the present state of the mind throughout Scripture. So when you study these passages, you will have to look at which word is being used to describe the mind and the verb that is used to describe the state in which the mind is at the present time. Now, we just seen, that when Jesus dealt with Satan, that He was very clear minded and knew exactly how to deal with him. And according to Scripture if you are a child of God, then you have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16). This tells me that I have the potential to think as my Lord and Savior does. He will clean up my processor and help me make the right decisions.

The seven words that are used in Scripture are (3) Hebrew words and (4) Greek words. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Greek. So when these passages were written, we see that God had certain things that He wanted to communicate at those times and obviously to us today.

These are the (3) Hebrew words and below are their descriptions.

  1. Ruwach : The rational, yet courageous, tempest, anger, part of the mind.
  2. Nephesh : The desire, appetite, discontented, greedy, lustful, pleasure part of the mind.
  3. Leb : The feelings, the will, the intellect, the consent, the considered, wisdom, understanding part of the mind.

These are the (4) Greek words and below are their descriptions.

  1. Nous : The intellect, thought, feeling, will, and understanding of the mind.
  2. Phronema : The mental inclination or purpose of the mind.
  3. Dianoia : The deep thought, the faculty, disposition, imagination of the mind.
  4. Noema : Perception, purpose, disposition, thought of the mind.

As you can see, there are different words used throughout Scripture and each of these different words have a little different variation to their meanings, or how they are used in Scripture. Now we are going to put each of these words definitions in a list, so that you can see them one right after the other. Throughout this study you will see the word that is used for the mind and the definition of that word. You will also see any other significant word that is used in the verse that might be an adjective or verb that will give us a better understanding with that verse defined. The reason being, we want to get as much out of this study as possible. Even if we just scratch the surface, by reading the different verses about the mind and ask the LORD to reveal His truths about our minds to us, or we take the time to really get in depth with trying to pull more and more out of it, the LORD will reveal something to us.

Now in Hebrew there is more definition to the word, but in Greek there are different words that describe the state of mind, which give it more meaning. Different cultures and different times in history. The LORD knows how to reach each generation and give them whatever they need, remember, He is the One who created everything, including our minds. We are made in the image of God and as we see, we are very complicated.

In Scripture we see that when we start breaking down words into their etymology that it really starts drawing out the meanings of the intent of the words being used. Then we look at the sentence structure in order to determine what definition of the word and how the author was intending to use the word being used. In this study I will leave it up to you to draw out as much meaning as you like in order to satisfy your mind and how it works. May God bless you throughout this study and we pray that God opens up your mind and gives you wisdom and understanding. We recommend that you also look at our other studies on the heart and the soul in order to see the differences and the similarities, for only God can separate each of the things properly. We only deal in physical and material things, but God, He sees all of the spiritual things that are happening all around us daily. This is why God tells us to be sober minded. For when we decide to alter our mind with drugs or alcohol, we give the enemy of our souls an opportunity to kill, steal, and destroy so much of our lives.

 (Ephesians 2:1-3)

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.  (NKJV)

(Ezekiel 23:1-49)

The word of the LORD came again to me, saying: “Son of man, there were two women, The daughters of one mother. They committed harlotry in Egypt, They committed harlotry in their youth; Their breasts were there embraced, Their virgin bosom was there pressed. Their names: Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister; They were Mine, And they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah. “Oholah played the harlot even though she was Mine; And she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring Assyrians, Who were clothed in purple, Captains and rulers, All of them desirable young men, Horsemen riding on horses. Thus she committed her harlotry with them, All of them choice men of Assyria; And with all for whom she lusted, With all their idols, she defiled herself. She has never given up her harlotry brought from Egypt, For in her youth they had lain with her, Pressed her virgin bosom, And poured out their immorality upon her. “Therefore I have delivered her Into the hand of her lovers, Into the hand of the Assyrians, For whom she lusted. They uncovered her nakedness, Took away her sons and daughters, And slew her with the sword; She became a byword among women, For they had executed judgment on her. “Now although her sister Oholibah saw this, she became more corrupt in her lust than she, and in her harlotry more corrupt than her sister’s harlotry. “She lusted for the neighboring Assyrians, Captains and rulers, Clothed most gorgeously, Horsemen riding on horses, All of them desirable young men. Then I saw that she was defiled; Both took the same way. But she increased her harlotry; She looked at men portrayed on the wall, Images of Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion, Girded with belts around their waists, Flowing turbans on their heads, All of them looking like captains, In the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, The land of their nativity. As soon as her eyes saw them, She lusted for them And sent messengers to them in Chaldea. “Then the Babylonians came to her, into the bed of love, And they defiled her with their immorality; So she was defiled by them, and alienated herself from them. She revealed her harlotry and uncovered her nakedness. Then I alienated Myself from her, As I had alienated Myself from her sister. “Yet she multiplied her harlotry In calling to remembrance the days of her youth, When she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. For she lusted for her paramours, Whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys, And whose issue is like the issue of horses. Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, When the Egyptians pressed your bosom Because of your youthful breasts. “Therefore, Oholibah, thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I will stir up your lovers against you, From whom you have alienated yourself, And I will bring them against you from every side: The Babylonians, All the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, Koa, All the Assyrians with them, All of them desirable young men, Governors and rulers, Captains and men of renown, All of them riding on horses. And they shall come against you With chariots, wagons, and war-horses, With a horde of people. They shall array against you Buckler, shield, and helmet all around. ‘I will delegate judgment to them, And they shall judge you according to their judgments. I will set My jealousy against you, And they shall deal furiously with you; They shall remove your nose and your ears, And your remnant shall fall by the sword; They shall take your sons and your daughters, And your remnant shall be devoured by fire. They shall also strip you of your clothes And take away your beautiful jewelry. ‘Thus I will make you cease your lewdness and your harlotry Brought from the land of Egypt, So that you will not lift your eyes to them, Nor remember Egypt anymore.’ “For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hand of those you hate, into the hand of those from whom you alienated yourself. ‘They will deal hatefully with you, take away all you have worked for, and leave you naked and bare. The nakedness of your harlotry shall be uncovered, both your lewdness and your harlotry. ‘I will do these things to you because you have gone as a harlot after the Gentiles, because you have become defiled by their idols. ‘You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will put her cup in your hand.’ “Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘You shall drink of your sister’s cup, The deep and wide one; You shall be laughed to scorn And held in derision; It contains much. You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, The cup of horror and desolation, The cup of your sister Samaria. You shall drink and drain it, You shall break its shards, And tear at your own breasts; For I have spoken,’ Says the Lord GOD. “Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, Therefore you shall bear the penalty Of your lewdness and your harlotry.'” The LORD also said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. “For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols, and even sacrificed their sons whom they bore to Me, passing them through the fire, to devour them. “Moreover they have done this to Me: They have defiled My sanctuary on the same day and profaned My Sabbaths. “For after they had slain their children for their idols, on the same day they came into My sanctuary to profane it; and indeed thus they have done in the midst of My house. “Furthermore you sent for men to come from afar, to whom a messenger was sent; and there they came. And you washed yourself for them, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with ornaments. “You sat on a stately couch, with a table prepared before it, on which you had set My incense and My oil. “The sound of a carefree multitude was with her, and Sabeans were brought from the wilderness with men of the common sort, who put bracelets on their wrists and beautiful crowns on their heads. “Then I said concerning her who had grown old in adulteries, ‘Will they commit harlotry with her now, and she with them?’ “Yet they went in to her, as men go in to a woman who plays the harlot; thus they went in to Oholah and Oholibah, the lewd women. “But righteous men will judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands. “For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Bring up an assembly against them, give them up to trouble and plunder. ‘The assembly shall stone them with stones and execute them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses with fire. ‘Thus I will cause lewdness to cease from the land, that all women may be taught not to practice your lewdness. ‘They shall repay you for your lewdness, and you shall pay for your idolatrous sins. Then you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.'” (NKJV)

(Daniel 5:1-31)

Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine in the presence of the thousand. While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave the command to bring the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple which had been in Jerusalem, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple of the house of God which had been in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone. In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other. The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.” Now all the king’s wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished. The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change. “There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father-your father the king-made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. “Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.” Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah? “I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. “Now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing. “And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.” Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. “O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. “And because of the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. “But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. “Then he was driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses. “But you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. “And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. “Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written. “And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. “This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; “TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; “PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old. (NKJV)

This particular verse I broke down a lot of the individual words to show people that the LORD knows your heart and your mind. He sees all and knows all!!! He does not look down with a condemning eye, He sent His Son to die in our place for our sins, not His own. God sees our struggles and in the verse preceding this one you will see that the Spirit intercedes in our behalf for things we don’t even know to pray for. God loves us, but He gave us his Word (The Holy Bible) to help us to get to know Him and His character and to help us with our current struggles here on earth, before we get to heaven.

This particular verse is the key to the battle in the mind. We are not to conform to this world system or it’s ideas, but be transformed in our thinking by the Spirit and God’s Holy Word, to prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The word perfect in Greek, translates “mature”, not that we will be perfect, but that we will be mature in our thinking. As you can see, the word for renewing says renovation, and I don’t know if you have ever done any kind of construction project or had one done, but when God came in to renovate my mind, he had to tear everything out to renew it. It was a mess and by God’s grace He is doing a great job at the remodel!!!

I would like to comment on this particular verse for we see that Paul is addressing the Corinthian church and addressing some different divisions that have popped up since he left. First off he was telling them to get it together and to stop the division. That they need to speak the same things (Doctrine) and that they need to be perfectly joined together to be in the same mind and judgments on things concerning the church. There were a lot of different problems in the Corinthian church. When you study these two books of the Bible, the problems become very clear and Paul was telling them to address their issues and to be of the same conclusion on their judgments.

I want to comment upon this verse Colossians 3:12, the reason being is because the LORD does not ask us to do anything that He Himself does not prepare us to do in the first place. When you break down this verse you see that the LORD has told us to “Put on” these things as if we were putting on a garment to go out for the day. Now, I don’t know about you, but I am sure that I have been outside without my garment on plenty of times as a Christian and looked just like it, if you know what I mean. When we are out of character with how we are supposed to be acting as a Christian, it is, as if we have walked outside without our clothes on and we look just as foolish and embarrassed as we should. I know that I have personally done this many times in my life and will probably continue to do it from time to time in the future. But I am sure that the next time I do it, God will remind me to put on my garment.

Search for 2559 in KJV

from 2556; to injure; figuratively, to exasperate:–make evil affected, entreat evil, harm, hurt, vex.

I believe this verse is trying to make a point, since when they wrote it in Greek that they wanted to emphasize that they “made their minds evil affected”, and they wanted to make sure you got the point for they even used the same Greek word in two different places to emphasize the point they were trying to convey. This same word “kakoo” in Greek translates “made” and “evil affected”. In another translation it says “poisoned their minds” (NKJV). It is amazing how others can affect our thinking and corrupt our minds if we allow it.

We have grief, sorrow, then we willingly sin, then our minds are alienated from the Lord, then we harden in pride, then we are of a reprobate mind (unforgiven), then when we come to the LORD, we war against our flesh in the law of our mind, we are still very carnally minded, then we start listening to the mind of the Spirit, He renews our minds, then we become fully persuaded after time and we become perfectly joined together in the same mind, then we have the mind of Christ.

Arthur Pink (Poison)

Satan is ever seeking to inject that poison into our hearts to distrust God’s goodness – especially in connection with his commandments. That is what really lies behind all evil, lusting and disobedience. A discontent with our position and portion, a craving from something which God has wisely held from us. Reject any suggestion that God is unduly severe with you. Resist with the utmost abhorrence anything that causes you to doubt God’s love and his loving-kindness toward you. Allow nothing to make you question the Father’s love for his child.

Arthur Pink (Bible Teacher, 1886 – 1952)
