Giving

Giving in the Word of God (The Holy Bible) teaches us that God will bless us as we give. That we are more blessed by giving than receiving. It also teaches us that God only blesses those who cheerfully give. That we will benefit by giving and that we should give to those who God tells us to give too. This particular study is not a “name it and claim it” study, for God is not our Genie and He does not do what we say. You will find throughout this study that God does do what He says He will do and that is how we benefit from the promises that God has already said in His Word.

You will also see throughout this study that God’s precepts do not necessarily line up with what the world says about giving, since this world is all about taking and getting as much as possible, but you will see that God’s ways are not man’s ways. That sometimes God tells us just the opposite of what this world says to do to be prosperous.

Now God wants to bless each and everyone of us and He is the One who makes the rules that truly apply in this world that we live in and I have seen people that do not even believe in the LORD who apply these same principles into their lives on a daily basis and benefit from these same spiritual principles. The reason being is that God has put certain spiritual laws into effect whether you believe in them or not. Such as reaping and sowing. As you sow you shall also reap. So if you are doing bad for example then do not be surprised when bad things happen to you. Just as if you are doing good things and then good things come back to you.

In the first part of this study we are going to see what God’s part is in the giving process. In Deut. 8:16-18 God teaches us humility before honor and He gives us the ability to make wealth. In Isa. 28:10 God teaches us precept by precept through His Word. In Isa. 55:8-9 we see that God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts. In John 3:16-17 we see that God is a giver Himself and has given us His son to die in our place, but He also expects a return on His gift. He gave His son with the expectation of receiving back to Himself souls of men who would receive His son as their Lord and Savior. According to Romans 8:32 it says that God gave us His son and that He will also give us everything else that we need. In Ephesians 2:8-9 we also see that God gives us the gift of Faith. God knows how to give good gifts,in Luke 11:13 He gives us the Holy Spirit. In 2 Peter 1:3-4 God gives us everything that we need to escape this world’s corruption. And in Ephesians 4:7-13 God gives gifts to His people the church. We see through these verses that God is a giver and that He has intention behind His giving. Purpose to bless all of those who receive from His giving. He also desires that we follow His intention of being good givers.

Now our part in giving starts off with getting our thoughts in order. We need to bring our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (1 Cor. 10:5). Next our attitude is to be Christ like (Philip. 2:5). Our minds need to be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2).

If you have the gift of giving (Romans 12:8) then give generously. If not then by doing what the above verses say to do and applying them into your life, then you will see things change in your life. In Proverbs 11:25 you will see that the generous prosper and are refreshed. In Luke 6:38 you will see that as you give that you will receive in the amount that you give, so give generously. In 2 Corinthians 9:6 you decide how big your harvest will be from all that you sow. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 you see that God loves a cheerful giver. In 2 Corinthians 9:8 you see that God wants you to bless others. In 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 you will see that it is God who will provide the increase and that people will thank God for you.

In this section we will see how God blesses our giving. In Deut. 28:2-12 we see that God blesses all those who obey His commands. In Genesis 26:1-13 we see that God blessed Isaac when God told Isaac to stay in Gerar during the famine and plant seed, then God blessed his crop a hundred fold. In 1 Kings 17:8-16 we see that God will bless us even during times of famine if we do as He tells us. One of God’s promises is in Psalm 126:4-6 where God promises to restore to us what the Evil One has stolen. In Mark 10:29-30 we see that God will return to us now what has been lost. In John 10:10 we see that God tells us the difference between Him and our Enemy (The Devil), that God wants us to have an abundant life. In Proverbs 10:22 we see that the LORD makes a person rich and that He adds no sorrow with it. And in Psalm 84:11 God will not withhold any good thing from those who do what is right.

Benefits to giving include Proverbs 11:24 Give freely and become more wealthy. Proverbs 18:16 giving can open doors. Proverbs 19:6 giving can bring you friends. And in Proverbs 21:14 gifts can calm anger.

Some of you may ask when should we give? According to Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 there is a time to plant and a time to harvest. Ecclesiastes 11:4 tells us not to wait for perfect conditions. In Ecclesiastes 11:6 we are told to just plant seeds and continue about our business. In Matthew 5:42 we are told to give to those who ask. I tell people when it comes to this verse, not to give what you do not have. For the Word of God teaches us not to co-sign for someone for we might have to take on their debt, so a general rule for this is only give what you can afford to do without. In Luke 12:13-34 Jesus teaches us about money and possessions. In Galatians 6:7-10 we will always harvest what we plant, to not give up. And in Matthew 7:12 we see the Golden rule, treat others as you want to be treated.

Now we are going to look at who God does not bless. In 2 Thess. 3:10 it says if you do not work, you do not eat. In 1 Tim. 5:8 it says those who DO NOT take care of their relatives are worse than nonbelievers. In Proverbs 24:30-31 we are told NOT to be lazy. And in 1 Tim. 6:10 it says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, so an abundance of money in some people’s hands can be a bad thing.

In contrast to who God does not bless, we are going to see who God does bless. In Proverbs 28:19 we see that God tells us to be hard workers. In Proverbs 6:6-11 we are told to take a lesson from the ants to be hard workers at the right time and to be diligent. In Proverbs 28:10 we are told to be trustworthy. In Luke 16:10-12 we are told to be faithful in the little things to receive bigger things. In Matthew 25:23 we are told to be faithful in the small matters and that God will give you more. In 1 Cor. 4:2 we see that someone who is put in charge must be faithful. And in 2 Kings 22:5-7 we see that the funds were put into the hands of trustworthy men. All of this scripture teaches us who God wants to bless and how He will do it.

Some of you might be asking does God really see what I am doing? In this section we are going to look at some verses where we see how God wants us to enjoy what He has put into our hands and how He provides for us and sees our sacrifices. In Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 we see that we are told to enjoy the gifts that the LORD has given us. In Luke 10:7 we are told to accept hospitality and that workers deserve their pay. In Matthew 10:9-10 we see that God provides through people and workers deserve to be fed. In Luke 7:44-46 Jesus is telling Peter about this woman’s act of kindness. In Mark 12:41-44 Jesus is giving recognition to the poor widow. In Luke 21:1-4 Jesus sees your sacrifice. And in Proverbs 19:17 it says give to the poor and God will repay you. Now as you can see not only does God see what you do, but He makes a way for you to be a continual blessing to others so that He can continually be a blessing to you.

In this last section about giving we are going to see what the Word of God says about who to give too. In Malachi 3:8-12 it says to bring your tithe to the church and test God to see if He will not open the windows of heaven and pour out more blessings than you can receive. In Malachi 3:8 it also says to bring in your offerings, these are above your tithes. A tithe is a tenth of your income and an offering is something above that which can be a separate gift to another ministry or to your church for a certain project. In Philippians 4:11-17 we see that we are to also give to missionaries or ministries that preach the gospel throughout the world. In Galatians 6:6 we are told that we should provide for our teachers. In 1 Timothy 5:17-18 we are told that Preachers and Teachers deserve double blessings. In Proverbs 19:17 we are told to give to the poor. In Galatians 6:10 we are told that we should give to our spiritual family. And in 1 Timothy 5:8 you are told to take care of your immediate family.

I hope that this study has shown you some different ways that the LORD has instructed us in how to give and why to give and that you have benefitted from it in some way. My prayer for you is that you will do as the LORD has told us to do and that you will be blessed for following His instructions and that you will become the giver that you have always desired to be and that you will learn that you cannot out give the ultimate giver!!! May God bless you and hold you and ultimately reveal to you all that He has planned for you to do in this life and that you learn to lean in close to Him and put your total trust in Him to do what His Word already says He will do for you. May the God of this universe continue to show us His truths and put it upon our hearts to do what He has told us to do and may He continue to make us a blessing to others and may we be blessed by others, we ask all this in Jesus’ name. Amen!!!!!!!

God’s Part

Deuteronomy 8:16-18 NKJV 16 “who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end- 17 “then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ 18 “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Isaiah 28:10 NKJV 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV 8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

John 3:16-17 NKJV 16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Romans 8:32 NKJV 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Ephesians 2:8-10 NKJV 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Luke 11:13 NKJV 13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

2 Peter 1:3-4 NKJV 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Ephesians 4:7-13 NKJV 7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” 9 (Now this, “He ascended” –what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Our Part

Proverbs 11:25 NKJV 25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

Luke 6:38 NKJV 38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

2 Corinthians 9:6 NKJV 6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

2 Corinthians 9:7 NKJV 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:9 NKJV 9 As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.”

2 Corinthians 9:10-11 NKJV 10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

God’s Blessings

Deuteronomy 28:2-12 NKJV 2 “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God: 3 “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. 4 “Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. 5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 6 “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. 7 “The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. 8 “The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. 9 “The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. 10 “Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. 11 “And the LORD will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12 “The LORD will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

Genesis 26:1-13 NKJV 1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. 2 Then the LORD appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 “Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 “And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 “because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” 6 So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.” 8 Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.'” 10 And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.” 11 So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.” 12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him. 13 The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;

1 Kings 17:8-16 NKJV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 So she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. 14 “For thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.'” 15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah.

Psalms 126:4-6 NKJV 4 Bring back our captivity, O LORD, As the streams in the South. 5 Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy. 6 He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.

Mark 10:29-30 NKJV 29 So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, 30 “who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time–houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions–and in the age to come, eternal life.

John 10:10 NKJV 10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Proverbs 10:22 NKJV 22 The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

Psalms 84:11 NKJV 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.

Proverbs 19:6 NKJV 6 Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.

Luke 12:13-34 NKJV 13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” 16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 “And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 “So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”‘ 20 “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” 22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 “Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 “And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 “If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? 27 “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 “If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? 29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 “For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 “But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. 32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 “Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Galatians 6:7-10 NKJV 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Matthew 7:12 NKJV 12 “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Who Does God Bless?

Proverbs 6:6-11 NKJV 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, 7 Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, 8 Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest. 9 How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep- 11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.

Proverbs 28:19 NKJV 19 He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!

Proverbs 28:20 NKJV 20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, But he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

Luke 16:10-12 NKJV 10 “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 “And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?

Matthew 25:23 NKJV 23 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

Does God Recognize What I Do?

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 NKJV 18 Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage. 19 As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor-this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.

Luke 7:44-46 NKJV 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 “You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

Mark 12:41-44 NKJV 41 Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. 42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 “for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”

Luke 21:1-4 NKJV 1 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 “for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”

Proverbs 19:17 NKJV 17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.

Luke 10:7 NKJV 7 “And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.

Matthew 10:9-10 NKJV 9 “Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, 10 “nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.

Who To Give Too?

Malachi 3:8-12 NKJV 8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. 11 “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the LORD of hosts; 12 “And all nations will call you blessed, For you will be a delightful land,” Says the LORD of hosts.

Philippians 4:11-17 NKJV 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account.

Proverbs 19:17 NKJV 17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.

Galatians 6:10 NKJV 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

1 Timothy 5:8 NKJV 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
